Freshwater Pearl Mussel Surveys February 2013

ECOFACT staff are currently advising the Office of Public Works (OPW) regarding Freshwater Pearl Mussels Margaritifera margaritifera in the South Western River Basin District (SWRBD). This work is in relation to the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Programme – a major programme for the reduction and management of flood risk in Ireland. The Irish CFRAM programme is being carried out in parallel with similar programmes across the European Union as part of the EU Floods Directive (2007/60/EC).

We are currently mapping the distribution of Freshwater Pearl Mussels in a number of catchments in the  SWRBD. Photos below are from our survey work last week on the River Flesk. For further information on Freshwater Pearl Mussel Surveys, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@ecofact.ie.
