ECOFACT staff have recently been engaged by the Office of Public Works (OPW) to advise on Freshwater Pearl Mussels Margaritifera margaritifera in relation to the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Programme in the South Western River Basin District (SWRBD). The OPW National CFRAM Programme is a major programme for the reduction and management of flood risk in Ireland. The Irish CFRAM programme is being carried out in parallel with similar programmes across the European Union as part of the EU Floods Directive (2007/60/EC).
We are currently mapping the distribution of Freshwater Pearl Mussels in a number of catchments in the SWRBD. This survey work is of course difficult at present due to generally unfavorable weather and river conditions; however despite this significant progress is being made a number of significant new populations of Freshwater Pearl Mussels have been identified. The surveys we are currently conducting will be of significant value in both protecting Freshwater Pearl Mussel populations during other survey work being conducted as part of the CFRAMS programme, and also as part of efforts to protect this endangered species in Ireland.
